I had visited many of the Utah locations for The Stand (1994) mini-series in 2017, but just never got around to posting them. By coincidence, I received a request for it just before the real-life pandemic hit the world, so I thought now would be as good as time as any to put these up. I split these up in the three parts that mostly follow the series’ segments, although part 4 is merged with part 3.
The majority of the series was shot in Utah, with additional locations in New York, Pennsylvania, Nevada, and California. Most of these will focus on the Utah locations. Also, be sure to check out the locations map at the bottom of each page.
The series opens on a secret government lab in California. In actuality it is a gas company, located at 590 Border Station Road in Coalville, Utah. I was excited that the fence pole used in the title card was still there!
It was locked up so I couldn’t get into the housing area, but as you can see, it looks mostly the same.
Most of the surrounding barn structures were still there at the time of the visit.
Next is the base in Baja, California, but is located at a broadcasting building located at 101 S Wasatch Drive in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The flu medicine commercial was shot at 10 Exchange Place in downtown Salt Lake City.
The gas station appears to have been torn down, but the area where Joe Bob Briggs is driving away was in Magna, Utah. The building you see behind him is located at 3505 S 8400 W Street.
There are a few shots of some kids playing basketball by a school, which has since burned down, so these shots were taken from the internet. This area is at 2651 S 9180 W Street in Magna, Utah.
The army pulls out onto 2700 S Street in Magna….
…arriving at the Empress Theatre at 9104 2700 S Street.
Unfortunately, Stu’s house is demolished but it was located at 2985 S 9000 W in Magna, Utah.
Next up is Larry’s mom’s house that is supposed to be in Queens, New York. It is located at 7241 Monticello Street in Pittsburgh. I didn’t personally visit this location, some here are some Google streetview shots for reference.
I’m not sure if they actually went there or not, but here is an establishing shot of Ogunquit, Maine.
The Vermont Center for Disease Control is also in Salt Lake City, located at 400 Capitol Park Avenue. This location was used in Halloween 4 and Halloween 6.
Times Square was used for a couple establishing shots….
The cafe supposed in Arizona is at 3595 S Echo Road in Echo, Utah. It was closed up, but I did get some shots through the windows.
Briefly back to Larry’s mom’s house….
Nick Andros bikes up to this spot in front of 7 S Main Street in Pleasant Grove, Utah.
I wasn’t able to figure this location out until after my trip,l so a Google shot below, but this is the building is used as the radio station during the Kathy Bates’ cameo scene. It is located at 312 E S Temple in Salt Lake.
Back to the Vermont CDC….
This is the spot where the ambulance first drives up in Halloween 4.
