Filming location

The Birds (1963)

Today marks the anniversary for the U.S. release of Alfred Hitchcock’s THE BIRDS. Although Hitchcock is notorious for filming in the studio, there are many exteriors used in this film.

We begin at Union Square at the corner of Geary and Powell Streets in San Francisco. (The pan to the pet store was a movie-magic wipe to a set.)

Many of the town exteriors were shot in Bodega Bay, California. The schoolhouse is at 17110 Boedega Lane.

Unfortunately, Annie’s house was a face built just for the film.

The Tides restaurant has changed a lot, but is located at 835 Bay Highway in Bodega Bay.

The Brenner house was on Westshore Road. It has since been demolished but you can see the same cedar trees still exist.

Tippi Hedren has tours of the Shambala Preserve. She has this great recreation of this iconic scene from the movie and usually pops out to say hello to tour groups!

A few exteriors were shot at Universal Studios, although only a couple facades still exist today.

I’ve been fortunate to meet Tippi Hedren twice (!) and Veronica Cartwright.
